I guess it really comes down to a budget, if you have the money in your budget for a Intel rig then go for it.
Also sort of depends on what your looking to do with said rig as well as that can determine your build path. If your doing a lot a of media encoding then the bandwidth and threads from a i5 or i7 would be the way to go.
That being said a normal run of the mill user may not need all that extra bandwidth and threads and would be better served by a Phenom II. In my opinion as I am on brink of a upgrade myself cost will be a concern for my aging q6600 setup so that will determine what path I go.
I think that a mildly overclocked 965 phenom II would be a close match to the i5 in most situations and I could port my ram over (as long as I use the right Chipset) which would leave more money for other things (Video Cards).
Again this just an opinion of course and I think a healthy discussion on this looking at all angles would best help the OP in a good selection of hardware.
