i started out with Nvidia back in the day, never had a problem with them, came around to upgrading my card and didnt want to cough up the money tho for a 9800GT (when they first came out) so rather then that i spent half of that and got a ATI 4670, used that card on 3 different comp (gaming, media center and girl friends), so kinda both tho, Nvidia makes great cards, but i dont want to spend those prices, so i go ATI, next card I get is a 5770 and should get it this xmas

5770 has a very nice performance for the amount you pay for it.

I used to have an ATI 1050X something something. It was an amazingly good card considering its price. Of course, that was a long time ago. I have an nVidia 9600GT now and it doesnt disappoint either. My opinion is that it comes down to preference and the games youre playing. I cant afford multiple card setups so I cant comment on the scalability of CF and SLi.

I have had much more ATIs than nVidia cards. I have water cooled HD4870x2 and HD4670 ULTIMATE now and before I've had HD4870 and HD 4850 before it. Before I 've had 8800GTS and before I've had ATI if I remember well. So it's like 10 to 1 for ATI.
It is what you like and one thing I can tell when buying new PC parts - look for used one because it could cost twice less the a new one. This way you could buy a high end VGA for the sama $ as a new midd range part.
For example used ATI HD 4870x2 worth around US$ 280 max and a new nVidia Gigabyte 460 GTX 1GB is at the same price. If you look at benchmarks you could see a big performnce gap between those two so think twice.
